Students at the Iowa State Capitol

Seven of our middle school students involved in SADD/ISTEP had the opportunity to travel to Des Moines to participate in Day on the Hill at the Iowa State Capitol.

This year’s theme — “Read the Fine Print: This is Addiction-for-Profit” — focused on how large tobacco and alcohol corporations target youth as lifelong customers through strategic marketing and manipulation tactics. Students learned about these corporate strategies and how they impact young people across our communities.

Our students then met with state representatives to share their concerns and visions for countering these practices, including a meaningful conversation with David Blom.

We are proud of our students for using their voices, advocating for healthy choices, and engaging in the civic process!
